Music is a business and there is so much to know. Sue Basko, a music lawyer in Hollywood, California, and Chicago, Illinois, will give a presentation about the law and business of recording and performing Cover Songs. In addition, there will be ample time for Questions and Answers on any music law topics.
Topics include:
- Why Cover Songs are good for you as a musician
- Copyright on Songs – quick lesson
- Performing cover songs legally
- Which cover songs can you legally record?
- Getting a mechanical license (song clearance)
- Royalties
- From the other side – you as the songwriter
- Using samples
- Using beats
- Questions from the Audience – Come prepared/ taking all general questions
After the presentation, Sue will take general questions on music law/ business. There will also be time to tour the studio. Joe Connors, Paragon’s Chief Engineer, will be on hand to chat one-on-one and answer any questions about recording or the studio. You can also meet the other music people present, share your demo, etc. There will also be prizes from Limelight for all participants, as well as two special prizes.

BIO: Sue Basko is a Lawyer for Music and Film licensed in Illinois and California. She has a J.D. magna cum laude; a B.A. in Film and Video; graduate work in digital audio and video production, media law, and web design; and Continuing Legal Education in Music Law, Social Media Law, Search Engine Optimization, Computer Forensics, etc.
Sue works with musicians, rock bands, upstart record labels, recording studios, festivals, venues, filmmakers, photographers, and other creative people.
